This morning I was reading the 'beatitudes' Matthew 5:3-12
I looked up a couple of the words used to describe those who are Blessed....
Blessed are the Poor in Spirit
- Theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Poor in Spirit = destitute of wealth of learning and intellectual culture which the schools afford*
Lexicon Note *Men of this class
most readily give themselves up to Christ’s teaching
and proved themselves fitted
to lay hold of the heavenly treasure.
Hmm...
Blessed are the meek
for they will inherit the earth.
Meek = mildness of disposition, gentleness of spirit, meekness*
Lexicon Note *Meekness toward God
is that disposition of spirit
in which we accept His dealings with us as good,
and therefore without disputing or resisting.
- In the OT, the meek are those wholly relying on God
rather than their own strength to defend them against injustice.
Thus, meekness toward evil people means
knowing God is permitting the injuries they inflict,
that He is using them to purify His elect,
and that He will deliver His elect in His time.
Isa 41:17, Lu 18:1-8
- Gentleness or meekness is the opposite to
self-assertiveness and self-interest.
It stems from trust in God’s goodness and control over the situation.
The meek person is not occupied with self at all.
This is a work of the Holy Spirit, not of the human will. Gal 5:23
Very interesting.
lack of resources - training or situation
pushes the 'poor in spirit'
and the 'meek'
to trust that God is enough.....
which makes them people
of the character
that God trusts with Huge rewards.
Kingdom of Heaven
The Earth.
Lord,
You define greatness
as childlikeness
Your Kingdom is
'a reliance on You paradigm'
Less of me
and More of You
means
MORE
so much more.
Wow.
Thank You,
PJ
